Do I need to speak to a mental health professional?

Talking to a mental health professional can be helpful when difficulties keep recurring, persist over time, or begin to affect your mood, relationships, work, sleep, or everyday functioning. Sometimes there is no clearly defined problem, but rather a sense that something is not quite right or that a particular period of life has become difficult to manage.

Do I need a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist?

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who can assess mental health difficulties, make a diagnosis and recommend medication when appropriate. A psychotherapist works through conversation to help you better understand emotional difficulties, relationships and recurring patterns. Sometimes one form of support is sufficient, while in other situations psychiatric treatment and psychotherapy can complement each other.

When can psychotherapy help?

Psychotherapy can be helpful for anxiety, low mood, stress and emotional exhaustion, relationship difficulties, low self-esteem, life transitions, grief and loss, or recurring patterns that cause distress or dissatisfaction.

When can medication help?

Medication can be helpful when symptoms are more pronounced, persist over time, or significantly interfere with everyday functioning. The decision whether to use medication is made on an individual basis, following an assessment of the nature, duration and severity of symptoms, as well as other relevant circumstances.

Can psychotherapy be combined with medication?

Yes. Psychotherapy and medication can be used separately or together. For some difficulties, a combination of the two may be the most appropriate form of treatment.

How long does psychotherapy last?

The duration of psychotherapy varies from person to person and depends on the reason for seeking help, the nature of the difficulties and the goals of therapy. In some situations, a few sessions may be sufficient to provide support and greater clarity during a crisis or a specific life difficulty. When the focus is on longer-standing emotional difficulties, relationships or recurring patterns, psychotherapy may continue for several months and sometimes for more than a year. The direction and duration of therapy are discussed throughout the therapeutic process.

How often are psychotherapy sessions held?

Sessions are commonly held once a week, particularly when psychotherapy is undertaken as an ongoing process. The frequency can be adjusted individually, depending on your needs, circumstances and therapeutic goals.

Who do I work with?

I work with adults. Psychotherapy sessions can be conducted in English or Croatian.
