Counselling is a shorter and more focused form of therapeutic work, intended for people experiencing a specific difficulty, stressful life situation, relationship problem, important decision, life transition or period of emotional strain.
It usually takes place over a limited number of sessions and focuses primarily on understanding the current situation, exploring emotional responses, identifying available resources and considering possible ways forward.
Compared with psychotherapy, which often involves a longer and more in-depth exploration of emotional experiences, relationships and recurring patterns, counselling is generally more focused on a particular issue or period of life. Even a small number of sessions can sometimes provide meaningful support, greater clarity and a different perspective on the situation.
